Counter Intelligence presents the next installment of left field drum & bass in the form of the label’s second album, available separately as four vinyl singles and collected in different editions with bonus items like digital downloads and even a limited edition handmade Counter Intelligence headphone bag, that's also used by several of our artists.
Entitled Coupe D’état, the title captures the meaning and intention covered by the music and artists involved in this display of the versatile sound that Counter Intelligence has come to be known for since the inception in late 2004. The label’s back catalog already comprises timeless music by Resound, Paradox, Macc, Beta 2, Alpha Omega, Pieter K, Martsman, Dissident, Equinox and Fracture & Neptune amongst others.
Germany’s Cycom is one seriously talented artist that has been around for years, just under the big guys’ radar.
Breaking through on Simon V’s Santorin label in 2000 and working on the netlabel Plain Audio, Cycom’s style has its focus on the breaks and the bass.
'Control' is the opening track on this LP, sporting a heavy-rolling beat layered over a sub bass so low you won’t know what hit you. After the breakdown stabs & FX enter the fray, and Cycom makes the rolling beat skitter and jump with delicate edits. A flute sample and vocals round off this heavy-hitter!
Flip the record over for a plunge back into deep and eerie ’98-style drum & bass.
‘Brain Damage’ is a stepper with classic ‘Headz / Source Direct string sounds, given extra depth by sound FX, break switches, vox and a 98 reminiscent sub bass. A brooding atmosphere, rising strings and a step pattern bass flesh out this dark atmospheric gem.

Next up we have St. Petersburg-based Dissident, our pride for 2013 (and has been since 2007's CI008), who shows everyone how a proper amen masterpiece should sound. ‘Such A Real World!’ is dystopian, rough, both deep and menacing (yes that many adjectives). Its precise militant beats, heavily edited with FX and glitches, show you that Stan is the man! Amen!
On the flipside we present you a retro-futuristic synthesizer workout called ‘Levitation Flight’.
Rescued from the gamma vaults, this tune has got our attention for years now and it still stands out.
A rolling break, a percussive and stabbing bass, swirling pad sounds and retro sound FX straight from an intergalactic gaming console command you to attention with the help of the percussive edits kicking in after a while: All elements combine to deliver a top class dance floor smasher. Further edits on the beats, rising synths and a bittersweet melody round the tune off nicely.
